The North Carolina Scholastic Media Association’s roots extend back to 1936 when UNC-Chapel Hill’s student-run campus newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel, began sponsoring the North Carolina Scholastic Press Institute. DTH editor David Stick helped organize the event in its fledgling years. In those days, The Daily Tar Heel was located in Graham Memorial, where it operated from 1931 until 1969, when it moved to the Student Union.
