SMITH02261937J. McNeill “Mac” Smith Jr.

As editor-in-chief of The Daily Tar Heel in 1936, Smith worked closely alongside Stuart Rabb to create and carry out the first North Carolina Scholastic Press Institute. The DTH also sponsored NCSPI in its first year. He went on to become a distinguished politician, a state senator, a civil rights attorney and a professor at UNC’s School of Law. Each year, the N.C. Bar Association awards the J. Mcneill Smith Award to a recipient in his honor.
