In 2012, NCSMA was instrumental in bringing the Hazelwood Symposium to UNC-Chapel Hill’s campus. Looking back on the 25th anniversary of the Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier case decision, NCSMA brought two of the original plaintiffs — Cathy Kuhlmeier Frey and Leanna Tippett Mosby — to campus to speak. Other panelists, including Erwin Chemerinsky of UC-Irvine School of Law and Frank LoMonte of Student Press Law Center, discussed how the Hazelwood decision affected scholastic and college speech, as well as the civic readiness of today’s youth.
