One of the first women on The Daily Tar Heel’s staff, Hunter was instrumental in the North Carolina Scholastic Press Institute’s third year. Director David Stick appointed her assistant director of the program in 1939, and he wrote that he couldn’t have directed the program without her or her organizational skills. “This was the period when women were finally being allowed to take their places beside men on the university campus,” Stick wrote. She served as senior class treasurer, later moving to New York City to attend Columbia University’s graduate program in journalism.
